Traditional Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling is a traditional festival which is asumed to be held since 1361, the year Turks conquered Edirne.the festival is held every year at the end of June and at the beginning of July. Wrestling fans all over the country and from other countries come to Sarayiçi to watch the oil wrestling taking place at the last three days of the festival. Wrestler Pehlivan Hüseyin from Tekirdağ defines Edirne Sarayiçi as the “Kaabe of oil wrestling”. It is where hundreds of wrestlers seek for their “kismet”-good faith, where the main winner becomes “başpehlivan”-the champion. Kırkpınar gives life to many traditions for seven centuries such as the ancestor sport oil wrestling, red candle, kıspet-the traditional wear, games, aghas, announcers, drums and shawm, golden belt. It is listed as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO in the year 2011.
